In recent years, ride-hailing services have become an integral part of daily life, facilitating commuting, creating jobs, and fostering economic expansion.1 It provides unprecedented ease and convenience in commuting and is unprecedented in the transportation industry. Despite the growth and economic progress, the ride-hailing industry faces challenges due to the need for a standard regulatory framework.

This research examines the growth of ride-hailing services in Nigeria since 2014, when Uber launched in Lagos State. The research reveals that the ride-hailing industry presents enormous benefits. These benefits include passenger convenience, driver job creation, flexibility, and increased competitive pricing. However, the industry still faces challenges, irrespective of the benefits identified. For example, the growth of ride-hailing services has reduced the market share of traditional taxi drivers, putting them at risk of losing their jobs completely. In addition, users of ride-hailing services face general consumer protection issues that have plagued the industry for decades, along with data protection and security concerns. Interestingly, the research finds that these issues are not limited to consumers alone but also affect drivers.
