The concept of plant breeding is interwoven into human civilisation. Plant breeding is arguably the lifeblood of successful agricultural development. The historical background of plant breeding is traceable to the ancient beginnings of agricultural activities. During the early days of agriculture, the innate innovative nature of man led to the separation of exceptional plants, whose seeds were specially saved and thereafter replanted. The selection of these seeds to produce specific traits is regarded as an early representation of plant breeding. Over the years, the repetition of this process alters the hereditary makeup of certain plant populations more than their unfavourable counterparts, leading to the introduction of plant varieties.
